N/A Phone owner and discuss car. Decide to go and take a look Tuesday night.

Drive from work in Santa Clara to storage facility in Richmond, in 880/80/580 rush hour.

Meet the owner of the car, but no car. Car is in the next town over - Point Richmond. Owner rides over with me to the car.

We find it parked along the side of a service road to the 580, close to San Quentin prison.

I check out the condition of the car and confirm that it is a real 123 GT based on internet research:

  • S/N 133351M249467 - 133351 means LHD 123GT
  • Engine bay and trunk lights (not working, of course)
  • Overdrive
  • Wiring harness with extra relays and fuses for fog lights
  • Reclining Recaro seats
A few GT things missing as follows:
  • Special dash with tray - you know a car's old when it's on its second dash :)
  • Fog lights - long gone
  • Horn button
  • Wheel trim rings
  • Tachometer
Engine had been changed from B18 to B20 sometime before previous owner's (8 year?) possession.

The car was four different colors (white, blue, cream, original dark green) as the front panels, doors, hood, and grill had all been replaced. The interior had been redone in black (originally tan) and was in decent shape.

Test drive around Point Richmond, run it through all its gears.

I look for rust, not bad but some in the trunk, floor panels, engine compartment.

Called my dad and checked out a few other things on the phone, but we both generally decide it's a good candidate and being a 123 GT, worthy of restoration.

I drive home, and finally eat dinner.

I sleep on it (or rather, think about it while attempting to fall asleep.)

N/A Meet last owner at Peet's in Berkeley, leave cash deposit and write up agreement for purchase of car.

As a sanity check (ok, more out of excitement), drive out to Point Richmond to take a further look at the car.

Find more rust under crossmembers, and right rear tire is completely flat. Sanity check confirms future owner's suspicions of insanity.

x36973 Took day off work. Met last owner at Berkeley AAA. Paid owner remaining funds for car, got only set of keys.

Drove out to Point Richmond with floor jack, blocks, jackstands, and all the usual tools that I keep in the back of the Subaru.

Find a partially inflated spare tire (and a lot of other stuff) in the trunk.

Switch tires and take the flat to Baja Tire. Tire ok, seal bad, get rim dismounted, cleaned, and painted for $25.

x36975 Drive car to get its first tank of gas - 8.774 gal, $3.359/gal, $29.47. Discover that tank full = 75% full on gauge.

Check fluids, fill remaining tires with air. Radiator expansion tank is suspiciously empty.

x37000 Drive car to BAMC garage. Clean out years of accumulated garbage from the trunk and interior.

Very minor tuning and inspection.

Perform triage into (a) throw away, (b) unidentifiable parts, and (c) identifiable parts.

Strangest things I find in trunk are vacuum tubes and a fire hydrant wrench.

Trunk after junk cleanout. Original rubber mat (not shown) in perfect shape for reuse.

Realy unsafe (unclamped and unraveling) fuel hose. Replaced immediately! Also note missing exhaust manifold stud on #1 cylinder.

Wet leaves provide good sound insulation, right?

"Lizard of rust" on hood. Special 123GT engine light is below lizard's left rear foot.

Headliner.

Fit issue between door and front panel.

Worst rust on car underneath front floor panel and crossmember. Except for floor pans, rest of car not bad.

World's dirtiest air cleaner!

N/A Fly to Calgary to visit my parents.

Return with bag of parts and tools from my Dad - timing gun, steering wheel, horn, windshield washer resevoir and pump, misc bolts and clamps, and oh yeah, best of all, an original dash mount tachometer for the 123GT that my dad had been keeping for 20, 30, 35? years.

Thanks Dad! You thought you had the newest and oldest Volvos in the family, got you beat on the oldest one now!

Lost first auction on GT steering wheel horn button (entire wheel) sold in Britain.

N/A Bought air filter, oil filter, valve cover gasket, anti-seize from Volpar in Santa Clara.

x37020 Buy case of 20W50 oil, rad flush, antifreeze, grease, cleaners, brushes, oil syringe, lubricants, wrenches, valve gauges, fuel hose clips for $98.92 at Kragen.

Change out oil & filter, air filter, drain rad and put in rad flush & water. Check timing, no adjustment needed.

Discovered radiator drain cock had been replaced some time in past with a nonremovable brass stud, workaround is removing lower rad hose and simulating Three Gorges Dam burst into oversized drain pan.

Transmission fluid change, discover that overdrive oil strainer gasket is nonexistent and replaced with RTV.

Discover I don't have a 13/16 inch wrench to turn over engine for valve adjustment, socket and ratchet hits fan.

Drive to Santa Clara for poker game. Lose $40 at poker game, and lose working headlights. Stay in Sunnyvale and come back next day in daylight. Dipper switch wires had self-destructed due to dipper switch not being mounted to firewall, easy fix.

x37114 Place large order with IPD.

Second tank of gas. 9.722 gals at $3.479/gal = $33.83, only 139 miles so a dismal 14.3 mpg. Expect to get 25 mpg or better when tuning is complete.

Discover water pump leaking from top. Water pump bearings slightly gone, as I can wiggle pump shaft by grasping fan.

Clean and gap plugs, check differential fluid, ok. Car does appear to still have limited slip diff as I can hold one side and turn the other.

Replaced old, unclamped braided fuel lines with new hose and FI clamps.

Place second order with IPD for new water pump.
